Vivendi told to pay Messier $23.5m

Mr Messier has asked for his golden handshake

The media company, Vivendi Universal, has been ordered to honour a $23.5m (20m euros) pay-out to its ousted chief, Jean-Marie Messier.
A New York tribunal told the Paris-based company it would have to adhere to the severance clause in Mr Messier's contract.
However, Vivendi said that it would challenge the ruling.
"After reviewing the tribunal findings, Vivendi Universal intends to challenge this decision through all available legal actions, both in France and the United States," it said in a statement.
It's indecent that Mr Messier asked and could get 20m euros for an American contract unapproved by the board of directors (Jean-Rene Fourtou, Vivendi chief executive)
Mr Messier, the former chief executive and chairman, was ousted a year ago after shareholders became increasingly angry about the company's finances and a $30bn pile of debt.

'Indecent'

Jean-Rene Fourtou, who replaced Mr Messier, described the tribunal's decision as "scandalous".
Vivendi had asked for the clause on employment termination in Mr Messier's contract to be voided.
The company also argued that the clause had not been approved by the company's board of directors.
"It's indecent that Mr Messier asked and could get 20m euros for an American contract unapproved by the board of directors when one thinks about his responsibility in the very dire situation Vivendi Universal was confronted with last summer," said Mr Fourtou.

Firesale

Since Mr Messier's departure, Mr Fourtou has put many of Vivendi's assets up for sale to reduce its debt burden.
The company is currently considering bids for its entertainment holdings in the US.
Vivendi became a media company after Mr Messier merged a French utility company with the Universal entertainment holdings of the US company Seagram in 2000.
The utility arm has since been spun off and is now known as Veolia Environnement.
The New York tribunal is a US body that provides arbitration for out-of-court settlement of disputes.

If you wish is to find a spot on Earth where you can escape the everyday chaos and spend some time in surroundings so different from your everyday's, to feel the sea in a proper way, then you need to visit the island of Kaprije. This island, 12 miles away from the county center Sibenik and near two national parks, Krka and Kornati, offers unforgettable summer bathing, crystal clear breath-taking sea, a break in a heavy shade of a Mediterranean pine walk near the sea with that shuffling sound of pebbles and protruding smell of grilled fish. The island of Kaprije is situated in the central part of the Sibenik archipelago with the surface of 9.67km2. It was named after the Mediterranean plant kapara. In the 14th and the 15th ct. the island belonged to the families of the noblemen from Sibenik. During the Turkish invasions in this region in the 16th and the 17th ct., the refugees from the mainland inhabited Kaprije. After the retreat of the Turks, they have partly left the island. That's period when St Peter's church was built. The place is surrounded by the hills among wich the highest is Velika glavica 132m above the sea level. The island vegetation comprises grass and bushes and very rare pine forests. At the foot of those hills there are some smaller fields where mainly olives and grapes are cultivated. Besides the agriculture the inhabitants are also known as skilled fishermen and seamen and lately also, as hospitable hosts. Naturally sheltered from all the winds, on its northeastern side, the port ok Kaprije enables safe berthing to the numerous yachts and to the yachtsmen offers relaxation and good local specialities. As it is well connected with sibenik, besides the seamen, kaprije attracts many visitors and tourists by its beauty, its sea rich in all kinds of fish and its hidden coves. Residents of the island of Kaprije hosted the most unusual guests last week. More then twenty dolphins occupied Kaprije's cove! Those dear animals didn't mind human' company at all so soon many people were swimming near them. Tourists from the nearby yachts hurried to testify this rear occasion, this life-time opportunity... to swim with beautiful dolphins...

The personals service of the Onion is changing now
Em and Lo (Emma Taylor and Lorelei Sharkey) are contributing editors at Nerve.com, where they created the weekly sex and relationships column, "The Em & Lo Down: Advice from Near-Experts." Launched almost three years ago, it's now syndicated on most of Spring Street Networks' personals partner sites. In addition, they write weekly horoscopes for Nerve and Spring Street Networks, and a weekly column debunking sex myths for the UK newspaper the Guardian. Their first book, The Big Bang: Nerve's Guide to the New Sexual Universe is forthcoming from Plume in July 2003, and is now available for pre-order on Amazon.com. They both live in New York City where they spend far too much time together.

Em & Lo are not doctors, psychiatrists, or even particularly wise in matters of the heart and other organs. These answers are meant as entertainment. Well, they entertain us. We hope they entertain you.

For over 20 years, the greatest threat to Iraqis has been Saddam Hussein's regime -- he has killed, tortured, raped and terrorized the Iraqi people and his neighbors for over two decades.

Under Saddam's regime many hundreds of thousands of people have died as a result of his actions - the vast majority of them Muslims. According to a 2001 Amnesty International report, "victims of torture in Iraq are subjected to a wide range of forms of torture, including the gouging out of eyes, severe beatings and electric shocks... some victims have died as a result and many have been left with permanent physical and psychological damage."

Thank you, great leader George W. Bush

March 18, 2003

By Paulo Coelho

Thank you for showing everyone what a danger Saddam Hussein represents.

Many of us might otherwise have forgotten that he used chemical weapons against his own people, against the Kurds and against the Iranians. Hussein is a bloodthirsty dictator and one of the clearest expressions of evil in today's world.

But this is not my only reason for thanking you. During the first two months of 2003, you have shown the world a great many other important things and, therefore, deserve my gratitude. So, remembering a poem I learned as a child, I want to say thank you.

Thank you for showing everyone that the Turkish people and their parliament are not for sale, not even for 26 billion dollars.

Thank you for revealing to the world the gulf that exists between the decisions made by those in power and the wishes of the people. Thank you for making it clear that neither José María Aznar nor Tony Blair give the slightest weight to or show the slightest respect for the votes they received. Aznar is perfectly capable of ignoring the fact that 90% of Spaniards are against the war, and Blair is unmoved by the largest public demonstration to take place in England in the last thirty years.

Thank you for making it necessary for Tony Blair to go to the British parliament with a fabricated dossier written by a student ten years ago, and present this as 'damning evidence collected by the British Secret Service.

Thank you for allowing Colin Powell to make a complete fool of himself by showing the UN Security Council photos which, one week later, were publicly challenged by Hans Blix, the chief weapons inspector in Iraq.

Thank you for adopting your current position and thus ensuring that, at the plenary session, the French foreign minister, Dominique de Villepin's anti-war speech was greeted with applause - something, as far as I know, that has only happened once before in the history of the UN, following a speech by Nelson Mandela.

Thank you too, because, after all your efforts to promote war, the normally divided Arab nations were, for the first time, at their meeting in Cairo during the last week in February, unanimous in their condemnation of any invasion.

Thank you for your rhetoric stating that 'the UN now has a chance to demonstrate its relevance', a statement which made even the most reluctant countries take up a position opposing any attack on Iraq.

Thank you for your foreign policy which provoked the British foreign secretary, Jack Straw, into declaring that in the 21st century, 'a war can have a moral justification', thus causing him to lose all credibility.

Thank you for trying to divide a Europe that is currently struggling for unification; this was a warning that will not go unheeded.

Thank you for having achieved something that very few have so far managed to do in this century: the bringing together of millions of people on all continents to fight for the same idea, even though that idea is opposed to yours.

Thank you for making us feel once more that though our words may not be heard, they are at least spoken - this will make us stronger in the future.

Thank you for ignoring us, for marginalising all those who oppose your decision, because the future of the Earth belongs to the excluded.

Thank you, because, without you, we would not have realized our own ability to mobilize. It may serve no purpose this time, but it will doubtless be useful later on.

Now that there seems no way of silencing the drums of war, I would like to say, as an ancient European king said to an invader: 'May your morning be a beautiful one, may the sun shine on your soldiers' armors, for in the afternoon, I will defeat you.'

Thank you for allowing us - an army of anonymous people filling the streets in an attempt to stop a process that is already underway - to know what it feels like to be powerless and to learn to grapple with that feeling and transform it. So, enjoy your morning and whatever glory it may yet bring you.

Thank you for not listening to us and not taking us seriously, but know that we are listening to you and that we will not forget your words.

Thank you, great leader George W. Bush.

Thank you very much.

If there is any use of biological weapon, France and other countries may change their point of view about the war. Take care. We could go in serious troubles then.
